Deep TMS
Electro Convulsive Therapy used to be the go-to physical treatment of resistant or severe depression until 2008 when the FDA approved Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation for treating severe depression.
Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (Deep TMS) is non-invasive therapeutic management of treatment-resistant depression. In deep TMS, the brain is stimulated using magnetic fields through coils placed on the scalp.
At Beaumont Psychiatric Clinic, a BrainsWay Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation machine is used to accurately and efficiently target affected areas of the brain while maintaining safe levels of deep stimulation.

Deep TMS Q & A
At Beaumont Psychiatric Clinic, we use a BrainsWay Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation device, a technologically advanced and non-invasive machine. It comes in the form of a helmet that is worn during treatment. The procedure is safe, with reports of little to no side effects.
Deep TMS is effective in the treatment of severe depression. It has also been found to have fewer side effects as opposed to Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and it is more affordable than ECT.
While Deep TMS is a safe procedure, some patients may experience mild side effects such as mild headaches, scalp pain, tingling sensation, drowsiness, twitching of facial muscles. Some of these side effects are uncommon, and they are usually temporary.
Like every other therapeutic procedure, there are indications for Deep TMS use. Usually, medications and psychotherapy are considered before Transcranial magnetic stimulation. However, patients with severe depression or patients who do not respond to drugs are considered for Deep TMS.
