Spravato and Ketamine Infusion Therapy Q & A

What is Ketamine Infusion Therapy?

From the Anesthetist's hands to the psychiatrist's office, Ketamine and Spravato are medications used for treatment-resistant depression. While both medications are similar, they differ in their mode of action. They are rapid-acting antidepressants that work by increasing dopamine (a feel-good hormone) activity in the brain.

Infusion therapy requires that the drug be given directly into the vein; this has a faster onset of action than a nasal spray. Patients often begin experiencing relief within 6 to 72 hours.

Cases of severe depression involving suicidal ideation and cases of depression with associated anxiety can also be treated with these drugs. They are both FDA approved and can be administered by a specialist at our facility.

What Happens in an Infusion Therapy Session?

After you have been assessed and it has been concluded that you will benefit from Ketamine infusion therapy, Dr. Mensah will give you an appointment.

On the day of the appointment, you will sit in a comfortable position while DR. Mensah administers the ketamine infusion according to standard procedure and protocol.

An infusion usually lasts about 45mins, the ketamine takes effect right away, and any side effects wear off soon after. A course of therapy usually requires that you have six infusions over two to three weeks and a maintenance dose every 2 to 6 weeks.

What are some of the side-effects of Ketamine Infusion Therapy?

You may feel some tingling sensation in your extremities, you may feel woozy, or like you are floating. You may also feel numb or unable to speak. However, side effects typically wear off within an hour or two of drug administration.
